Driving a Car in Australia with UK License

  • Sep 28, 2022

If you're an Englishman planning on driving in Australia, you may be wondering if your UK license will be valid in Australia. The good news is that you can use your UK license to drive in Australia, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, you'll need to make sure your license is current and valid. You'll also need to be aware of the different rules and regulations of the road in Australia, as they may be different than what you're used to backing home. But with a little preparation, you'll be behind the wheel in no time!

UK License in Australia

Australia has DKT, and the UK has a HGV theory test. This test is designed to assess your understanding of the road and of the vehicle itself. But, despite that, provided that your UK driver's license is active and not revoked, terminated, or invalidated, you are permitted to drive in Australia. A learner's license, a temporary license, or a license on trial are not approved.

If you are considering moving to Australia, remember that for the initial three months following your visit, you may only drive with your foreign license. After that, you must submit an application for an Australian driving permit.

Always have a copy of your passport and driver's license on you. All of those are crucial in situations like post-accident car assessments, periodic breathalyzer testing, and safety inspections.

The rules and guidelines for driving with an international license may vary from one state to another because Australia is a republic made up of six states and two regions. For further information, be sure to check the Australian Government website.

Things to remember when driving in Australia

Merging Lanes
Keep in mind that the car at the front has the right-of-way anywhere two lanes combine into the same (i.e., where lane markings cease). Make room for the cars in the lane you are entering if there are many clearly defined lanes and one terminates. When there are huge queues of integrating traffic, it's crucial to maintain a safe space between your car and the one in front and merge slowly.

Unlawful U-turns
Only when there is a U-turn authorized notice at a traffic signal is it legal to conduct a U-turn. A $100 penalty and demerit marks are assessed for failing to yield when doing a U-turn or in an area where it is not authorized. You need to use your signal to let other cars know what your plans are when doing a U-turn. Additionally, you must yield to every other pedestrian and car.

Please be aware that U-turns are only permitted across an uninterrupted white line in Western Australia.

In conclusion, driving in Australia can be challenging for someone from the UK who has never driven on the roads of Australia. There are different local laws and, overall, a different experience while driving in Australia.
